The Italian National Blood Centre (CNS) performs scientific and technical coordination and control activities in the transfusion field in compliance with current transfusion legislation.

The work of the CNS is also implemented through its participation in national and EU/international projects.

The CNS promotes:

  • Scientific research projects in transfusion medicine, in the areas of safety, self-sufficiency and technological development, as well as research projects related to blood donation, which can be classified as follows:
    • basic research projects
    • translational research projects, aimed at transforming basic research results into clinical applications in order to improve and implement methods for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases
    • clinical research projects, conducted with the aim of providing new knowledge, and verifying efficacy/effectiveness and risks, to determine whether new therapeutic approaches regarding transfusion or blood donation are more beneficial than existing ones
  • Projects contributing to the improvement of the blood transfusion network.

For these purposes, the CNS uses funds from its institutional economic resources under Law 219/2005, as well as earmarked funds allocated to it.

Where possible, national and European calls for tenders for the funding of project proposals drawn up by the CNS are issued.

Regional Coordinating Structures for transfusion activities can propose scientific research projects or those aimed at supporting the improvement of the transfusion network, of national significance, to the CNS through the following channels:

Project proposals must develop the following elements:

  • project rationale
  • general objectives
  • specific objectives
  • Expected results/expected deliverables and associated timelines
  • methods
  • Scientific project manager for the SRC
  • project duration
  • project phases
  • subjects involved in the project
  • Any Collaborating Facilities
  • Expected technical and economic reports and their periodicity
  • forecasted budget
