At Sapienza University of Rome, the two Level II masters in “Transfusion Medicine: Erythroplatelet Immunohematology” and “Patient Blood Management (PBM): Transfusion Medicine in a multidisciplinary field” have been confirmed for the current year.

The two courses, sponsored by the National Blood Center and SIMTI, will last one year and will give the right to 60 credits.

The master in “Transfusion Medicine: Erythroplatelet Immunohaematology” is directed by Professor Luca Pierelli, director of the Complex Operational Unit of Immunohaematology, Transfusion Medicine and Stem Cells at the San Camillo-Forlanini hospital in Rome. The course will aim to train all participants in theoretical-practical knowledge that can potentially be used for the management from a clinical diagnostic point of view: of blood group typings that present seromolecular discrepancies or rare allelic variants and of the results obtained from complex immunohaematological studies.

The master course titled “Patient Blood Management: Transfusion Medicine in a multidisciplinary field” is directed by Professor Stefania Vaglio, head of the SIMT Complex Operational Unit of Sant’Andrea in Rome and director of the Regional Blood Centre of Lazio. It will aim to train participants to early identify the patients at high transfusion risk, to correctly approach perioperative anemia, to evaluate transfusion triggers, to promptly identify the presence of coagulopathies, to determine the significance of bleeding, andto know the therapeutic options available by limiting the use of transfusion therapy. The cost for participation for the two individual master’s courses is 2,500 euros.
