In Italy, Cord Blood Banks (CBCs) are public health facilities that on behalf of the National Health Service collect, preserve, and distribute cord blood haematopoietic stem cells.

There are currently 18 facilities in Italy located in 10 regions: 16 are part of a hospital’s blood transfusion medicine unit, and two operate as part of a hospital’s haematology units.

The banks carry out cord blood banking activities in line with standards defined by national (State-Regions Conference, Acts No. 1770 of 10th July 2003) and international (FACT-NETCORD) guidelines of proven quality and effectiveness.

All facilities have undertaken to qualify their activities by obtaining and/or preparing for FACT international accreditation.
