Oropouche (OROV) is a segmented single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the Orthobunyavirus genus, Peribunyaviridae family. The virus circulates in Central and South America and the Caribbean and can be transmitted to humans mainly through the bite of the Culicoides paraensis midge, which is found in forested areas and around bodies of water, or some mosquitoes of the Culex genus. Viral circulation is suspected to include both epidemic and wild cycles. To date, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of OROV.
