SISTRA is Italy’s Transfusion Services Information System, established by Ministry of Health Decree of 21/12/2007, and developed as a strategic support for the achievement of the objectives specified in Law 219/2005: “Self-sufficiency of blood and blood derivatives, transfusion safety, uniform essential healthcare levels and advancement of transfusion medicine”.

SISTRA enables the exchange of information flows between the Ministry of Health, the Regions and Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano, and the Italian National Blood Centre (CNS), thus facilitating both the interaction between regional and national authorities, and the prompt and precise recording and analysis of blood and plasma consumption and production data.

The data, which are collected and disseminated in real time through SISTRA, contribute towards the implementation of Italy’s annual National Self-sufficiency Programme.

Within SISTRA, there is a register of blood establishments (regional coordination centres, blood services and collection units) and three main categories of information:

  • data on the activities in each single region
  • data on the compensation of blood components and plasma derivatives
  • data on haemovigilance

The CNS coordinates the information flows of the blood transfusion services and avails itself of a working group nominated by the blood transfusion service’s permanent technical advisory committee for the development of SISTRA.

All the blood transfusion facilities in the country registered with the system can access it.

Requests for changes in activity/donor data after validation

Requests for changes from the Activity Data Section of SISTRA of already validated data related to transfusion activities and donors can be sent by the relevant Regional Coordinating Structures for Transfusion Activities (SRCs) to the CNS General Secretariat exclusively through the following channels:

Requests must include the reason for data correction.

Following the evaluation of the received request, the National Blood Center will send a formal notification to the requesting SRC regarding the action to be taken.

For clarification and information on using SISTRA functions, a request for assistance can be submitted to the CNS General Secretariat.
